County LibDems oppose Tory budget

At a lengthy Full County Council meeting on Wednesday, February 1st. The Liberal Democrat Group, led by Cllr. S. Flitter, opposed the budget put forward by the Derbyshire Conservative controlling group. Acknowledging that cuts had to be made, and that under the previous Labour administration, all services were concentrated towards the main towns with very little used to fund outlying areas in the county, Cllr. Flitter criticised the Conservatives for failing to recognise that vulnerability lies particularly with those who live just above the breadline and can claim no kind of benefit whatsoever.

A partnership with a private sector company, set up by Chesterfield Borough Council when controlled by the Liberal Democrats, has just won a major national award for the quality of the service it provides for Chesterfield residents. The private sector partner, Arvato, has provided such back office services as revenues, accounts and information-technology for Chesterfield residents since the partnership was agreed by the then Liberal Democrat Council in October 2010. The development , which took place at a time of severe economic recession across the country, was one of several major developments brought about under the previous Liberal Democrat Borough Council and was highly commended in the national regeneration awards. The success was particularly creditable given that there were over 400 entries, including the Olympic Park , the Longbridge site in Birmingham and Smithfield Market in London. Cllr Ray Russell ( Liberal Democrat Leader of the Borough Council from 2003 to 2011 ) said that ' this success is great for Chesterfield and a fitting recognition of the modern, determined and innovative approach of the former Liberal Democrat Borough Council in bringing quality development and jobs to the area. Snow preparations

Shortly after the chaos caused by the heavy snow back in the winter the then Liberal Democrat Borough Council started to put in place measures to try and ensure a better response if the Chesterfield area is hit by heavy snow this winter, for thr third year running. They decided they could not leave things solely to Derbyshire County Council who have responsibility for snow clearance of the roads and pavements - but who have not managed to provide the necessary level of service to keep things running. Good financial management has ensured that the he Borough Council has had the money to buy snow clearing equipment to fit to the front of normal Council vehicles when necessary and has been able to involve some local farmers in helping if needed. The Council has also striven to get the general public to help on their own streets and has agreed plans to work in a better co-ordinated way with Derbyshire County Council. This foresight and planning should mean that the borough is able to cope with the winter much bet
