National recognition for Borough Council regeneration site.
The transformation of the long-derelict Dema Glass and Car-Auction sites into a modern development which includes the much admired B2Net Stadium, a new Tesco and the 4 star Casa Hotel has been recognised in a prestigious national awards ceremony. The development , which took place at a time of severe economic recession across the country, was one of several major developments brought about under the previous Liberal Democrat Borough Council and was highly commended in the national regeneration awards. The success was particularly creditable given that there were over 400 entries, including the Olympic Park , the Longbridge site in Birmingham and Smithfield Market in London. Cllr Ray Russell ( Liberal Democrat Leader of the Borough Council from 2003 to 2011 ) said that ' this success is great for Chesterfield and a fitting recognition of the modern, determined and innovative approach of the former Liberal Democrat Borough Council in bringing quality development and jobs to the area. Chesterfield has done better than many towns over recent years - but there is still much to do. Continuing with the modern approach of working constructively and innovatedly with our partners and the private sector in the future should bring more major benfits to our great town.'
