CHESTERFIELD FAST BECOMING ONE OF LABOUR'S FORGOTTEN TOWNS - HOLMES

Paul Holmes, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Chesterfield was today due to address a public meeting Defending Public Services in Chesterfield, unfortunately owing to parliamentary votes on the Prevention of Terrorism Act and on emergency legislation to nationalise Northern Rock he is now unable to attend.

CHESTERFIELD COUNCIL TENANTS LOBBY PARLIAMENT TO END DISCRIMINATION AGAINST COUNCIL HOUSING

Chesterfield Council tenants are travelling to London tomorrow, Tuesday 22 January 2008, to join campaigners from throughout the UK in order to protest about the Government's continuing discrimination against council housing. Cllr Tony Rogers, Lead Member for Housing on CBC, will give evidence to the Defend Council Housing Evidence Session in the House of Commons. This coincides with the Committee Stage of the Housing Bill and is designed to help lobby the Government over its continued discrimination against those authorities who have retained the management of Council Housing as a result of tenant's wishes.

View from the Commons - Happy Anniversary

2008 marks some significant anniversaries. It is exactly 100 years since the first Old Age Pensions were introduced in 1908 by Lloyd George and the Liberal Government (to be followed in 1911 by the Liberal Government introducing the first Sickness and Unemployment benefits). It is 60 years since the NHS was created in 1948- by a Labour Government but based upon a blueprint drawn up by the Liberal William Beveridge. The same William Beveridge who drew up the 1919 Act, that under Prime Minister Lloyd George introduced large scale Council Housing.
