The Mayor of Chesterfield for 2020/22, Councillor Glenys Falconer

Glenys was born in North Wingfield and was educated at Deincourt School. She left aged 15 to work as a weaver at Robinson and Sons, which unfortunately caused Glenys to suffer from life-long hearing problems.

Glenys became a mother to her daughter Kirsty during her first marriage and got involved as a volunteer running a Mother and Baby group at Storrs Road Methodist Church. She then secured evening work at the Aquarius nightclub, enjoying seeing all the shows and serving the ubiquitous chicken in a basket! A brief move to working for the Civil Service Club ended when she was asked back to the Aquarius to run the Spanish bar during lunch times. All these jobs had to fit around her most important role; being a mother.

Glenys met Keith in the playground of Brampton Primary School. This meeting led to them becoming involved in the Gingerbread group in Chesterfield for single parents and they then became a couple. Their first date was to go and watch the Fosdyke Saga, followed by attending a Liberal Party fundraiser together at the Old Vicarage on Church Way. They married in 1979. Glenys worked from home as a busy childminder for 10 years and became Chair of the Chesterfield and District Childminders Association, assisting Social Services and interviewing aspiring childminders. She returned to work at Robinson and Sons, then at Safeway (now Morrisons), before working at Chesterfield Valet Services dry-cleaning shop.

All of this had to fit around being involved alongside Keith's political career within the Liberal Democrats, which led to Glenys being elected as a Councillor in 1999 and serving until 2011. Keith was the Mayor of Chesterfield from 2005 to 2006, and Glenys served as his Mayoress during his term as Mayor. Glenys was re-elected in 2019 as a Councillor for Holmebrook ward.

Her contributions to the community have continued throughout the years by taking an active role within the Rose Hill United Reformed Church; Glenys sang in the church choir, chaired the Ladies Club, ran a family club and is an Elder. Glenys' volunteer work continues; she is currently part of a befriending group and is a trustee for Hope Springs.

Her hobbies include singing with The Choir at the Royal and going to keep fit and art classes. Any spare time that Glenys might have is filled with time spent with her family; she and Keith have 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren!

Mayor's Consort, Councillor Keith Falconer

Keith was born in Chesterfield and has lived and worked here all his life. He attended William Rhodes school before going to work at Robinson and Sons.

He had three children from his first marriage and later met Glenys in the playground taking the children to the school where Keith served for several years as a parent Governor.

Keith was employed at Pearson's Pottery and Worcester Heat Systems in the work study departments, and he was a union rep for Unite for 20 years.

In the 1970's, Keith became active in the Liberal party, and was first elected to Chesterfield Borough Council in the 1980's. As well as representing his ward members he has served on many council committees and was Mayor of Chesterfield in 2005/2006. He remains a Party executive member and the Council Group Secretary.

Keith is an active supporter of the local community and is currently a Governor at Parkside School and a trustee for Hope Springs. He is also Chair of the Friends of Whitecotes Field and is an Elder at Rose Hill United Reformed Church.
