This week (1st Dec) marks the start of the 8th month since we were able to save the Communities that Work project from closure on 31st March 2008. It is wonderful news that in its first six months alone the project exceeded its whole year targets for getting people back into work in areas of high unemployment like the Rother area.

This project works so well because it is not seen as a threatening to remove benefits -instead it concentrates on help and advice and reaches out to many who would be reluctant to enter a more formal office.

With the collapse of Gordon Brown's credit boom we are going to need projects like this even more. Unemployment has already soared nationally to the highest level since 1997 and home repossessions to the highest since 1992. Yet the recession has barely started.
