Shadow Home Secretary Surveys The Scene In Safer Chesterfield
Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary Nick Clegg MP visited Chesterfield on Friday. The MP for nearby Sheffield Hallam paid Chesterfield a visit to see the new safety measures employed by Chesterfield Borough Council. Along with Paul Holmes, MP for Chesterfield, Nick visited Chesterfield Police Station on Beetwell Street to discuss the type of crimes local people are facing.
Nick and Paul were shown around the CCTV control room and met the staff, who do a great job of keeping our town centre safe. They were then introduced to members of the Safer Chesterfield team, who wear two-tone blue uniforms so that they can easily be recognised by the public. These wardens not only help make Chesterfield a safer place, but provide valuable information to local people and visitors to our town.
Paul Holmes MP said 'We were pleased to welcome Nick Clegg to Chesterfield to show him the excellent safety measures the Borough Council has introduced. The alcohol-free zone has been particularly successful, as have the Community Safety Wardens.
As the Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick is well-placed to inform the Government of the fears local people have about crime. Chesterfield Borough Council are working hard to increase safety measures, but Tony Blair needs to listen to what Chesterfield and Staveley people are really concerned about; their safety.'
Nick Clegg MP said 'I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Chesterfield. The Borough Council are working hard to ensure it is a safe and pleasant place to live. The improvements they have made are making a real difference to keeping local people safe.'
