Don't Flog Off the Family Silver

On Saturday 25th June concerned residents held a Tapton House Picnic to protest against the Council attempting to sell off this important part of Chesterfield's heritage.

Cllr Paul Holmes, Leader of the Opposition on Chesterfield Borough Council (CBC), was invited to address the meeting.

Paul says "the strength of opposition from Chesterfield residents is clear. The way they have organised themselves to lobby the Council, the Press and to hold public events like this one is impressive."

"Liberal Democrat Cllrs agree entirely with local people. In recent years we have previously raised the declining state of the House in Council meetings. I have previously asked why the Council were not looking to use the House as an extension to the successful Tapton Innovation Centre that the Council built next door. That would raise commercial income which would largely pay for the upkeep of this historic listed building"

"This morning (27th June), we have submitted a self explanatory motion to the Council meeting to be held on 20th July. It is time CBC made the most of this magnificent building and its part in our town's heritage. They should not flog off the family silver"
