Planning Proposals Bulldoze Opposition

10 Jul 2007

Speaking in Communities and Local Government questions today in the House of Commons, Paul Holmes, Liberal Democrat MP for Chesterfield said:

"I met this morning with a coalition of 14 environmental groups who do not believe the Minister's reassurances.

"They do believe that the Planning white paper is designed to allow controversial proposals such as airport terminals and nuclear power stations to be bulldozed through without opposition.

"What will Parliament's role be in passing this legislation? Will MPs have a free vote -as Councillors are legally required to do when taking decisions in Local Authority Planning Committees? Or will it be a whipped vote?"
