General Election Launch in Chesterfield

'Julia 4 Chesterfield' sees Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Julia Cambridge celebrate the launch of her bid to be Chesterfield's first woman MP

Party President Sal Brinton joins Lib Dem members

February saw Chesterfield's historic Market Square painted yellow as local Lib Dems met in the Square to kick off the General Election Campaign in Chesterfield.

Julia Cambridge welcomed the large group of campaigners and thanked them all for joining her to launch and begin the countdown to May 7th General Election.

Julia who lives in Brampton said:

'What better place than Chesterfield's Market Square to kick off the campaign. It represents all the good things Chesterfield stands for. But there is still a lot to do. I want to be Chesterfield's voice in the Houses of Parliament, getting a better deal for Chesterfield.

'I am passionate about helping people get the things they need for a good quality of life, like safe neighbourhoods, job prospects and security, and top class education for the kids.'

With a family background in the health service Julia is particularly protective about the NHS and spoke at length to a local resident who had come to meet her about his long wait for a GP appointment:

'The future of the NHS is a cause worth fighting for. That's why I am so pleased that the Liberal Democrats put the NHS on the front of our manifesto. We want £8 billion invested to improve services for all and to guarantee equal care for mental health. As Chesterfield's MP I will speak up and fight for more investment in vital NHS services.'

Market Hall Rally

Supporters and members of Chesterfield Liberal Democrats got the chance at the General Election Rally to hear speeches from Julia Cambridge, Regional Chair Phil Knowles and the keynote speaker Baroness Sal Brinton.

Sal Brinton was welcomed and thanked by Phil Knowles and congratulated on the start of her party Presidency, which began in January. Baroness Brinton took questions from the floor on subjects ranging from campaigning to the NHS.

Supporting Julia's campaign she said: 'Julia Cambridge is a strong local champion who will be an excellent MP representing the interests of Chesterfield residents.'

Women at the top

History will be made if Chesterfield chooses Julia on May 7th. She will be the town's first woman MP.

Julia said:

'I will be proud to be the first woman to represent Chesterfield. However, what is more important to me is to speak up for women on the issues that affect them daily. Cuts to legal aid disproportionally hit women and that's why I took a policy motion to the region to challenge the cuts. Why have some women been paid less for doing the same or similar work to men? That needs to be tackled to stop the gender pay gap. Traditionally women are in low paid and part time job, that's why it's more important than ever to raise the tax threshold to £12,500 to get more women out of paying taxes on low wages, keep the pounds in their pockets to get a better standard of living. I want that kind of help for women.'
