In a letter published today in the Derbyshire Times, Chesterfield Borough Cllr Ray Russell challenged the Labour-held Council over their decision to raise Council Tax rates, despite an offer from the Government to continue funding a freeze in rates.

In his letter titled You got us into this mess: Tax rise was not needed, the Liberal Democrat Opposition Leader writes:

"Whether these increases are in pence or in pounds, the one thing that's certain is that added together they'll make a significant extra burden - particularly for those on the lowest incomes."
