Chesterfield Borough Council needs to take urgent action to dramatically improve Recycling Rates

Lib Dem Councillor Tom Snowdon says that "despite the climate emergency, Chesterfield Borough Council has yet to take decisive action to raise the current low levels of recycling of the household waste they collect from across the town. Because of this they have failed to reach their own target"

"The Chesterfield Borough Council website states that "Our target is to recycle 50 per cent of the waste collected by 2020."

The latest figures available show that Chesterfield has recycled just 44.1% of household waste." And even more worrying it seems this is less than that achieved in 2017/2018, when 46.3 per cent of the household waste collected was recycled and composted. "

In a national league table of recycling rates across all 345 councils in England, Chesterfield Borough Council is at position 148.

Tom Snowdon says "this is just not good enough. There is no excuse - similar Borough Councils in the East Midlands are performing better for example Daventry at position 79 and Rushcliffe at position 92. But really, I am less bothered by league tables than by Chesterfields' failure to take action to radically improve performance. The Climate Emergency won't wait, and neither should we."
