6th of May - IT'S ELECTION DAY !!!!! Good Luck to All Our Candidates
All 64 seats on Derbyshire County Council are up for election on May 6th. At the moment Conservatives have 36 seats, Labour have 24 seats and Lib Dems have 3. There are 254 candidates competing across the 61 divisions of Derbyshire county.
In Chesterfield we currently have 1 County Council seat, that held by Barry in Stavely North and Whittington. So we have a lot to do - but what an opportunity. At the last county elections two of our candidates missed out by less than 250 votes. And 16 of the existing county councillors are not standing for re-election so the possibility of reshaping the current political balance is even greater. In Chesterfield our candidates are as follows
Amanda Brassington - Birdholme Division
Barry Bingham - Staveley North and Whittington Division
Keith Falconer - Boythorpe and Brampton South Division
Ed Fordham - Loundsley Green and Newbold Division
Adrian Mather - Spire Division
Paul Niblock - West and Walton Division
Shirley Niblock - Brimington Division
Tony Rogers - St Mary's Division
You will know from the leaflets, letters and press releases that have gone out over recent weeks that we are working hard to gain seats. Have you ever thought of joining us.
There are lots of reasons to join the Liberal Democrats. Some people join because they want to stand up for our values, of openness, tolerance and unity. Some because they want to help us win elections. Others so they can stand for election and stand up for their community.
But above all the Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full.
Membership starts at £12 a year, but the party hopes that you might consider donating a little more. The recommended amount (as decided by members like you at our conference) is £72. There are concessionary rates too: students can join for £1 for their first two years of membership and if you're under 26 or are entitled to receive state benefits (other than the state pension or child benefit) then membership starts from just £6 a year.
