Ian Barfield calls for urgent action to clean up rivers and coastlines as incidents of sewage spills continue to rise.
Raw sewage is discharged everyday into rivers throughout the UK. A recent investigation by the Guardian revealed that the discharges into the Rother/Doe Lea are among the worst in the country.
Recently published stats show that there were 3,527 sewage spills into the Rother and Doe in 2022 and that this rose to 5,166 in 2023 The River Derwent was also affected, suffering 3,047 sewage spills in 2022 rising to 4,016 spills in 2023.
Ian Barfield writes that
"It’s a disgrace that this Conservative Government has enabled. You pay your water bill, the water company pays its shareholders dividends and then dumps sewage in your rivers.
Only the Lib Dems have a radical solution to this. Water companies would become Public Interest Companies any profits would be reinvested in infrastructure not given to fat cat investors."
