Who We Are

Tom Snowdon Heading

Whether you live within a short radius of the Crooked Spire or much further afield, you are most welcome.

Chesterfield is a town of nearly 100,000 people - about 40,000 households - in the north eastern part of Derbyshire. The parliamentary constituency coincides more or less with the Borough of Chesterfield. Local government is provided here at two or three levels: Derbyshire County Council, which sits in Matlock and the local Borough Council. Within the Borough of Chesterfield, Staveley also has its own Town Council and Brimington has its own Parish Council too.

Between 2001 to 2010, The Liberal Democrats held the Parliamentary seat of Chesterfield. Paul Holmes was our local MP. Unfortunately in the general election of 2010 the Tories split the vote here and as a result the seat was lost to Labour by just 549 votes. For 8 years between 2003-11, the Liberal Democrats ran the Borough Council; we still retained 40% of the vote even when losing control in 2011.

We are proud of what was achieved in those years and that we laid the seeds for much of the town to continue to prosper in spite of the economic downturn generally. We believe and have shown in local government here when in office that ordinary working people get a better deal from us than their alternative choices - but we need more help to continue the work.

We are currently looking for extra helpers to assist in leafleting the constituency ready for the Westminster elections scheduled in June. If you are interested in and motivated to helping us strive to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which together we can seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community where no-one should be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity we would love to hear from you. Please drop an email over to our membership secretary with your contact details and we will be in touch.

Alternatively, if you have any general non-partisan or apolitical views or suggestions on how to improve the place where we live, we would still love to hear from you not being an active Liberal Democrat member or supporter - or indeed being a supporter of another political party - doesn't mean that your ideas would not be good ideas.
