Paul Holmes MP and Cllr Bagshaw with Local Cadets

Paul Holmes MP and Staveley Town Council Leader Cllr Mick Bagshaw met the Cadets at Camp

Chesterfield MP Paul Holmes and local Staveley Councillor Mick Bagshaw attended the Derbyshire Army Cadets Annual Summer Camp in Ripon this week. Around 360 cadets, both male and female, are attending the camp for two weeks of adventures and expeditions. Paul and Cllr Bagshaw have already met the Staveley branch of the Army Cadets at a joint event with the Royal British Legion, but both said the insight gained from visiting the 2-week Summer camp was amazing.

The Army Cadet Force is open to young people from 12-18 years old and the emphasis is on making new friends and having fun. As Cadets become more confident they can gain promotion through the ranks and can take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, along with activities such as rock climbing, archery and mountain biking. They can even work towards a BTEC National Diploma.

Paul Holmes enthused 'The camp was brilliant. It gave the young people a chance to work as a team, whilst doing things they really enjoy. The cadets were doing Derbyshire proud, showing self-discipline, leadership qualities and self-confidence. The activities provided are really superb.' Cllr Bagshaw agreed 'They all seemed to be having such a great time, we wanted to join in ourselves!'
