EAST MIDLANDS CARD FRAUD LOSSES PLUMMET

March 9, 2006 12:00 AM

Paul Holmes today welcomed figures released this week by APACS, the UK payments association, showing that total card fraud losses in the East Midlands fell by 23% in 2005, down by £7.2m from 2004 (£23.5m in 2005 compared to £30.7m in 2004).

Commenting on the figures Paul said:

"Chip and PIN has done a good job in cutting card fraud so far, which is excellent news for consumers, retailers and banks alike. But we must not get complacent - need to stay one step ahead of the fraudsters. We all need to take actions to stop ourselves becoming the victims."

"Remember the following tips:

1. Say not to strangers. Don't give your PIN or bank passwords to cold callers or e-mails. Always check who you are dealing with. Are they who they say they are?

2. Keep it secret, keep it safe. Keep your cards safe and never give out your PIN to anyone.

3. Surf safe. If you're buying on line only ever use a computer with up to date virus protection and only shop at secure websites.

4. Check your statements. If you spot anything you weren't expecting contact your bank or building society.

5. Dispose of personal information safely. Cut up or shred statements or documents with personal information before throwing them away.

"Be vigilant and encourage others to be careful with their cards and personal details. And if the worst happens get in touch with your bank. They will sort out the problem and you should get your money back."
